Is customer loyalty a pipe dream | Ashleigh Rose Photography | Johannesburg Family & Event Photographer
The Hidden Cost of Loyalty in Family & Event Photography in Johannesburg
In a world where everything feels disposable, customer loyalty has become rare and incredibly valuable.
I don't need to tell you - we live in an era of endless choice. Doom scroll long enough and you’ll find another photographer. Ask on Facebook and you'll be swarmed. Click again and you’ll find someone cheaper. Or someone with a slightly different preset. Consumers have more options now than ever before.
And in industries like family and event photography in Johannesburg, that reality is deeply felt.
But behind every gallery delivered on time, every photo, every perfectly captured christening or birthday party, there’s a human being.
And sometimes, that human being has sacrificed more than anyone realises.
The Hidden Cost of Always Being “Available”
As photographers, Ashleigh Rose Photography doesn't just show up with a camera:
We show up with our energy.
We show up with our presence.
We show up ready to manage dynamics, soothe nerves, read the room, and anticipate moments before they unfold.
I have left my own children’s birthday parties to photograph other children’s milestones. I missed my late maternal grandmother’s funeral because I had a party booked. I was photographing 3 different events on the second weekend after a C-section.
This isn’t shared for sympathy. It’s shared for perspective on the lengths some of us go to in order to ensure repeat business so that what has become our life's work is seen as financially viable to all the doubting Thomas' out ther.
When you run a photography business like Ashleigh Rose Photography, one which is built on relationships and word-of-mouth alone and you've had to start it from the ground up - meaning no funding, no experience with photography or the business side of things, absolutely no contacts - and the contacts you do have (family and a handful of friends), don't have the money for such a service; the pressure to be dependable and always available and on call is non-negotiable, even if your other life calls.
You want to be the one families trust. The one they call every year. The one who documents their story from baby showers to matric dances to weddings, because you have been there from the start and know the backstory. No shooting list is required for you - because that's how well you know them.
You want to be chosen again, and just one time you're not available, could sacrifice the entire relationship.
Photography Is Not Just a Transaction
We are often told not to mix feelings with business, but for Ashleigh Rose Photography, photography IS connection.
When I photograph a family, I learn their history, willingly and not in a contrived fashion either, but because I'm genuinely interested and intrigued. I am a storyteller and love hearing others tell their stories.
I quickly learn who is shy and retiring, who is standoffish but a softie underneath. Who doesn’t get along with everyone, but secretly loves being called to be part of family pics. Who must absolutely be in every frame. I memorise names, surnames, jobs, their position in the family tree or friendship circle - all so I don’t interrupt vital moments when clients are mingling or dealing with a crisis to ask awkwardly, “Who is this again?”
I position people intentionally because I understand where they fit emotionally, not just physically. I understand the nuances of family alliances or in family disputes and know who not to push, or who I can have a laugh with. I know when someone needs a good cry or a skinder.
Over time, it becomes innate.
You almost feel like part of the family.
That kind of service doesn’t happen overnight. This is not something you can buy or ask AI to generate for it for you. It takes years of consistency, observation, and genuine care. For Ashleigh Rose Photography it’s deeply personal work.
Which is why loyalty means something.
In an Age of Choice, Loyalty Is a Luxury
Consumers at both ends of the financial spectrum can be the most unpredictable. Those with limited budgets must weigh every expense carefully. Those with abundance have endless options at their fingertips.
And no matter how much you give, it can still feel like it isn’t enough when there's so much competition out there and the barrier to entry is just an entry level camera and a contact.
But here’s the truth:
Photographers although seemingly interchangeable, and are available a dime a dozen: Connection is not mass-produced and shared history is not a preset.
When a client chooses to return year after year, Ashleigh Rose Photography sees this as more than just repeat business. It is mutual respect. It is recognition and appreciation by the client of all the unseen effort that goes on behind the scenes.
And that kind of loyalty? Ashleigh Rose Photography ensures it extends both ways.
The Value of Being Known
When you book Ashleigh Rose Photography, you are not booking a random service provider. You are choosing someone who knows the benefits that getting to know names and personalities will play in the long run. Someone who knows which moments are going to pull at your heart strings. Someone who knows how to twist the arm of the most reluctant of personalities into joining a photo and giving us a smile and then relishingn the relief we see on the faces of family member who know what a treasured capture that photo will be.
That level of investment doesn’t come from chasing trends, or taking on random call outs. It comes from commitment and in simple terms - care. I care about what I do and I care about the people I photograph.
In a disposable world, perhaps the real luxury is LOYALTY.
Perhaps the real value lies in staying.
And perhaps, the quiet and kind loyalty that is built over years of shared milestones, is something worth protecting and fostering because without a connection you're basically a stranger posing infront of a lens of another stranger who is oblivious to how much this means to you and what it's taken for you all to show up.
In a world where service providers are interchangable, connection still matters for that final look and feel. If connection matters to you, and you are from a time or identify with the age where relationships, chatting, laughing, and greeting people by name means something to you - then you're our tribe. You're our kind of people and we want to photograph you.
If Loyalty Matters to You
If you’re looking for a family photographer in Johannesburg who values long-term connection over quick transactions, I would love to photograph your story.
Because photography is not just about images.
It’s about showing up year after year.
